Perché leggere letteratura con giovani adulti in una scuola professionale?

In the curricula for the language of schooling in vocational education, the teaching of literature has almost completely been supplanted by a functional approach to the subject. This choice was made to put more emphasis on vocational reading and writing skills so that students would be better prepared for their future social roles in society and the world of work. Nonetheless, literature understood as a repertoire of narratives that come to us both from the past and the present, is of fundamental importance for the development of reading for pleasure, for helping students to understand various aspects of reality, also the vocational one, and for discovering the richness of possibilities that the language can offer.

Nei programmi per l’insegnamento della lingua del territorio nella scuola professionale l’insegnamento letterario è stato quasi del tutto soppiantato da un approccio funzionale alla disciplina. Questa scelta è stata operata nell’intento di potenziare direttamente le competenze di lettura e di scrittura professionale, per un miglior inserimento sociale e nel mondo del lavoro. Eppure la letteratura, intesa come repertorio di narrazioni che ci giungono dal passato e dal presente, si rivela fondamentale per favorire il piacere della lettura, per aiutare a capire i diversi aspetti della realtà, anche professionale, e per scoprire la ricchezza di possibilità offerte dalla lingua.
