Der Gebrauch von voll ausgebauten Lehrwerken im Sprachunterricht hat Vor- und Nachteile. Moderne Materialien bieten eine echte Hilfe für Lehrpersonen und Lernende, die alle Fertigkeiten abdecken und einem einigermassen logischen Aufbau der Sprache folgen wollen. Diese Kurspakete werden oft von erfahrenen Experten und Verlagen verantwortet und überspannen mehrere global standardisierte Sprachniveaus.
Die Sprache ist jedoch ein Medium und nicht ein Lehrgegenstand. Lehrwerke werden oft zu teuren Zwangsjacken, wenn alle Zusatzmaterialien sinnvoll gebraucht werden sollen. Sie sollen die Bedürfnisse einer möglichst grossen Zahl von Lernenden befriedigen und sind deshalb wenig auf konkrete Lernerprofile angepasst. Die Konzentration aufs geschriebene Wort behindert oft die verbale Interaktion und die Gestaltungsfreiheit der Lernenden. Zudem werden oft eher die strukturellen Aspekte der neuen Sprache betont. Lehrwerke können einen bestimmten methodischen Ansatz zementieren und lassen den Benützerinnen wenig Freiheit. Als Folge davon wiegen sie die Lernenden oft in einem falschen Gefühl der Sicherheit.
Die Popularität von kompletten Sprachkursen beeinflusst auch die Rolle der Lehrperson. Wichtig ist, dass sie es schafft, die Materialien an die Bedürfnisse der Lernenden anzupassen. (Red)

The course-book has become an almost indispensable part of any language course. Some people may consider it an insult to even question the importance of course-books. However, I take the position that there are two sides to every coin, and language course-books are no exception.

The benefits of using course-books

Time-saver and support for teachers. For most course-books there is a teachers’ book, containing detailed lesson plans, answers to the exercises, progress checks, useful suggestions and alternatives, as well as extra resources to complement material in the book. The teacher does not have to search high and low for a variety of activities: the modern course-book contains exercises using the four main skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening). This is particularly advantageous in the case of authentic tape recordings, which would be rather difficult to obtain otherwise.
A well-planned course-book with plenty of ready-to-use exercises and multimedia support can be a big help especially for the inexperienced teacher – or a relief for the tired, stressed busy or unmotivated teacher! Above all, the teacher who has to take over at the last minute can be reassured she is using professionally-developed material.

Support for autonomous study. The students’ book is ‘complete’: it contains a variety of exercises in reading, listening, writing, speaking and, above all, grammar. It usually has useful appendices with grammar explanations, an irregular-verbs chart, a phonemic chart as well as a complete list of all tape-scripts, thus enabling the student to study and revise at home. The student workbook follows the main course-book unit for unit, and is equipped with an answer key, likewise permitting the student to work on his own.
This can be a great advantage
a) if the teacher is not very competent or interesting,
b) if there are long intervals between the lessons,
c) if the pace in class is very slow,
d) if the student has to miss lessons
